You Should be Watching TED LASSO

You should be watching Ted Lasso.

That’s it. That’s the post.

Thank you for reading.

What’s that? You need more? You sure? But like… that’s all I need to say! Okay, okay fine.

Let’s be blunt: so far AppleTV+ has been kind of a dud. I watched The Morning Show, and thought it was fine, but it was Diet Sorkin (the final episode was the best of the bunch, but that’t not acceptable). Defending Jacob lost me after a few episodes (Ólafur Arnald’s opening theme is perfection, though). So when Ted Lasso came along, I more or less ignored it much like I do with everything else on the service.

That is until Gruber mentioned it on a recent episode of “The Talk Show”. He showered it with such praise I figured I should at least give it a shot. After all, Sudeikis was always a favourite when he was on SNL.

I am so unbelievably glad I did. It is by far the best show I’ve seen in ages, and certainly the best sit-com in recent memory (yes, I also just recently finished Schitt’s Creek which I also loved, but this is different). Gruber compared it to Cheers, mostly because it’s got a large cast of characters who you fall in love with almost instantly. But I think it’s more akin to Frasier (which is maybe the highest of praise I could give to a sit-com). A single episode can have you literally laughing out loud, and damn-near in tears a few minutes later. The most recent episode to air as of this posting, “Make Rebecca Great Again”, in particular features some absolutely incredible heart-string pulling, and a masterful performance from Sudeikis.

Turns out there’s a reason for this. It’s this guy:

You might not instantly recognize that name, but chances are you know his shows. Bill Lawrence is the co-creator of some of my favourite shows including Cougar Town, and Clone High. But the show he’s perhaps best known for is of course Scrubs; a show no stranger to hilarity and gut-punches. Ted Lasso doesn’t have the surreal slapstick of Scrubs, but the heart absolutely is there. If you liked any of his other shows, I guarantee you will enjoy the show.

In fact, I’m fairly confident there isn’t a single person alive who will not fall for Ted Lasso’s charms. At a time where everything in the world seems bleak and hopeless, this show is a little beacon of light that will lift your spirits for 30 minutes.

It is my new favourite show, and hands down the best I’ve seen this year. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you haven’t already done a free trial of AppleTV+ now’s a great time to do so. And if your trial has expired, pony up the cash for this show alone.

It is absolutely worth it.
